Surface Water Temperature: ~76.6 F
Water Clarity: ~4.0 Feet
Lake Level: 802.8 Feet above sea level
Lake Level Relative to Weir: -0.7 Feet
Observations: Monday (8/29/22), The water clarity has decreased ~1.0 feet to ~4.0 feet and the surface water temperature increased ~0.9 F to ~76.6 F over the last week. The lake’s temperature and dissolved oxygen remains well mixed. The lake looked good today with visible blue-green algae in the water column, but we did not observe any blue-green algae surface scum. (See picture on the left). However, last week we had several reports of blue-green algae blooms like picture we took off our dock on the left below last Thursday. Today there was no obvious bloom off of our dock. See picture on the right below:
Today we found blue-green algae species of Anabaena, Gloeotrichia, and Aphanizomenon
We are now in the peak period for the next 4 weeks for blue-green algae blooms.
The DEC recommends that you, your family, and pets avoid contact with water that contains blue-green algae like Aphanizomenon, Anabaena, and Gloeotrichia. Everyone should be very careful to watch for blue-green algae blooms for the next few weeks.
We will not be able to have updated temperature and dissolved oxygen graphs this week. Expect to have updated graphs again next week. The lake’s temperature and dissolved oxygen remains well mixed. If we continue to get 90 F weather the lake will probably stratify again. Surface water temperature was ~76.6 F and bottom water temperature was ~75.9 F. 1-meter equals 3.3 feet.
Always use your own visual assessment before making contact with the lake water at this time of year as the blue-green algae situation can change daily if not hourly. Please regularly check the DEC HABs alert map for more detailed updates on Honeoye Lake HABs alerts:
